Follow-up workshop of Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning (MEAL) for the Public Sector to enhance Accountability and Transparency

The following workshop was targeted at key M&E and project implementation employees of federal and state government authorities who benefited from the previous year's workshop. The workshop was one of SDGcaps' capacity-building initiatives, and Benadir Innovation supports with its execution. The main objective of the follow-up workshop was to instruct participants how to apply M&E to the public sector.

The specific goals were to enable participants to learn about and reinforce their knowledge of results and impact management systems, how accountability and learning contribute to good governance, and how to establish and implement results-oriented monitoring and evaluation systems. and how to use the MEAL matrix, methodology, and proposal TOR. 

The workshop incorporated adult learning principles and interactive modules that integrated both plenary and group sessions. This approach aimed to ensure active and meaningful engagement of participants in the workshop activities. These sessions facilitated the delivery of presentations and discussions on key topics, such as identifying relevant stakeholders involved in project monitoring and evaluation, clarifying different levels of project results, designing projects using a logical framework, developing indicators and targets for each result level, monitoring performance indicators throughout the project lifecycle, and evaluating project outcomes against the established results. 

To assess the impact of the follow-up workshop on participants' knowledge and skills, a pre-evaluation form was administered on the first day of the workshop. Subsequently, a post-evaluation form was distributed on the second day to determine if the workshop had effectively enhanced participants' understanding and proficiency.

Workshop Overview

The BU innovation with the support of Benaadir University and Karolinska institute hold a follow up Workshop of Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning for the Public Sector to enhance Accountability and Transparency. The activity is linked to the outcome of the project public sector institutions contribute towards the attainment of relevant SDGs using a multisectoral approach in an effective, accountable, and transparent way.  The workshop was held over the course of two days, and it featured a diverse group of participants from a variety of public institutions working in monitoring and evaluation. 

The program began punctually at 9:30 a.m. with a recitation from the Quran provided by one of the guests, followed by participant introductions. For the opening of follow up ‘workshop MEAL for the public sector and accountability ’Eng Raage M Adam extends a warm welcome to all the participants, setting the tone for an engaging and productive session. Following remarks by SDGCap PLT Coordinator Prof. Hassan, who briefly discussed the project's aims, collaborations, and activities, Dr. Hassan emphasizes the pressing nature of the environmental challenges we face today, particularly the issue of pollution and how the public sector needs to consider and be accountable for those who effecting the environment. The session was officially opened on behalf of the rector of BU by SDGCap project board Prof. Fuje.
