Global Conversation on Sustainable Health: Advancing Quality Care During Labour and Child Birth

Experts from Uganda, Sweden, and beyond will discuss innovative interventions, respectful maternity care, and how collaborations between UN agencies, researchers, hospital managers, and policymakers can enhance the quality of care during childbirth and drive sustainable improvements.

Panelists: 

  • Dr. Richard Mugahi, Commissioner for Reproductive, Maternal and Child Health at the Ministry of Health, Uganda, will discuss the role of policy and support in implementing maternal health interventions during birth across Uganda.
  • Louise Nordström, Midwife and Head of the Labour Ward at Karolinska University Hospital, will share improvement work from a Swedish perspective, with a particular focus on respectful maternity care.
  • Prof. Helena Lindgren, from Karolinska Institutet and the Midwize project, will discuss research and practical approaches to respectful care, dynamic birth positions, and better birth outcomes in Uganda, East Africa, and Sweden.
  • Christine Kajungu, project coordinator at UNFPA Uganda, Christine Kajungu, Project Coordinator at UNFPA Uganda, will share insights from implementing maternal health projects in Uganda and beyond, offering a UN perspective.

  • Innovations in Maternal and Newborn Health: Highlighting successful interventions, focusing on those that can be scaled or adapted to different contexts.
  • Respectful Maternity Care - satisfaction of care: Discuss strategies to ensure respectful and patient-centred care during childbirth, emphasising dignity, cultural competence and satisfaction of care.
  • Collaborative Implementation: Explore how partnerships between NGOs, researchers, policymakers, and local health systems drive sustainable improvements.
